So, lots of stuff to report.

First of all, I GAVE BIRTH. January 1 at 7:29 a.m., my son Parker Christian Lyon was born. Parker after my great uncle, Christian after Christian Laettner. DON’T HATE. My great uncle Parker was the coolest. He showed me The Last Waltz and we drank tea and one time he was telling me something while a cat was trying to cross the frozen lake behind his house, meowing angrily, and I could not hold it together. As for Christian Laettner, my husband has loved him for a lifetime, and we are hoping Parker inherits his confidence and general badassedness (but hopefully not his crappy attitude / 90s haircut).

Can I say that, no matter how much I tried to prepare myself, the reality of a newborn was something I was not prepared for? I thought I would be blissed out with the glory of motherhood, but I got hit hard with the baby blues his first two weeks of life. That was simply awful. I was asking other moms / my mom stuff like “Why do people have kids? When will it be worth it?” and feeling terrible for thinking such things. It wore off as my hormones evened out but still, every single day I question myself, wondering if I’m doing anything right, feeling anxious and worried and scared and tired. So, so tired. And bored! Oh, the boredom! (I’m a terrible person. No I’m not! Yes I am.)

But he is the most handsome. And at 5 weeks (today!) his personality is already pretty apparent. He loves baths, hates getting out of baths, loves looking at lights, loves his dada, loves his pacifier, hates being swaddled, loves wheeling his arms and furrowing his brow. He has smiled at me, genuine non-gas smiles, a handful of times, and there is no better feeling. His nicknames so far: Jabroni, Bro, Baby Son, Sweet Cherub.

Our other baby, our dog Wanda, acts as though he is her baby. She growls at any doorbell / unknown visitor; when he cries she soothes him by licking him all over; and once she came over and dropped her toy onto his face, like, “Your turn!”

So, we are figuring it out.

Second of all, my new collection, DON’T KISS ME, is available for preorder!

I am incredibly excited about this little book, and I can’t wait to unleash it upon you. Working with FSG has been a dream - so many talented and excited people there! The book comes out July 2, but why not preorder it, so you don’t have to worry about it for the next five months?

I guess there isn’t a third thing to report. Oh, maybe here is something: I loved Jami Attenberg’s The Middlesteins, and merely liked George Saunders’ The Tenth of December. I REALIZE THE LATTER CONFESSION IS BLASPHEMOUS.
